Vista bash

Post  g00eY on Fri Jun 13, 2008 9:45 am

GG Windows Vista is terrible. At least for me. Many people have had [borat]great success[/borat] with Windows Vista, but I have not. However, I am willing to accept my noobness for a large waste of time towards the beginning of my Vista endeavors, but much of what I have encountered in the past week is borderline unacceptable.

Why didn't Windows make Vista completely backwards compatible? They really dropped the ball on this one. This is why many people who buy computers with Vista installed "upgrade" to Windows XP. For instance, it took me 2 hours to find the right video driver for my laptop. Really? Yes, really. Coincidentally, my computers card was the only unsupported card in the series made by nVidia.

And then when I tried to print my homework on Tuesday, guess what? My printer was unsupported by Vista. Great... I tried all the hacks I could find and nothing would work. I ended up asking a friend to print it for me.

Needless to say, I am back to Windows XP. Thankfully I wasn't a complete idiot and I made an entire image of my hard drive and was able to restore my settings in an hour. Too bad I'm stuck with the Vista boot loader right now that I have to hax away.

Rant over.

it is unfortunate that more programs and hardware arent as compatible, but i acutally like vista more. (rofl at [borat][/borat] that was very clever).

alot of programs i got to work thru reading some forums and stuff, changing settings

--> there is a function to run programs xp sp2 compatible or just change the mode of it- others just require that you run them as administrator.

to be honest i find xp much less powerful..less tools and tho it's more compatible with some software/hardware, i think the tradeoff of the new interface and system is worth it for me :]

wat vista version did u have?

I had Vista Ultimate (I don't see what was so ultimate about it and it seemed to have a few extra useless features).

I agree for the most part that Vista has a lot of useful features. However, it takes quite a bit of processing power to be able to run them. I have a pretty nicely configured Sony Vaio:

Intel Core Duo T2400 @ 1.83 GHz
2.00 GB RAM
nVidia GeForce GO 7400 (128 Mb)

The specs are good enough to run Vista, but what makes Vista special is a lot of the eye candy. While I enjoy the aero-ness and the sidebar and the task bar previews, I don't enjoy sacrificing that much performance. My boot time was terribad and I found glitches in everyday software I used such as iTunes.

The tweaks to enhance performance are there, as are the tweaks to adjust many programs, but it's so ridiculously tedious to go through the many programs I use and hammer out the problems. In the end the incompatibility with my video card and my printer (both of which I think should have been supported since literally every other product in their respective lines were) made me revert to XP. XP is fast, efficient, and familiar. Not as pretty, but certainly very functional. I'll probably download Google widgets to replace the sidebar deficiency.

BTY (BTW) I got the boot loader fixed so now my PC is back to normal.

xpress 1150 ati radeon (256 mb hyperthreading)
2.00 GB RAM

No. You do NOT want a Sony laptop. Great specs, pretty screens, but friggin terrible quality. The warranty is also useless because everyone who works at Sony CS (including "managers") are dull. I would take the Dell m1330 over this (Sony counterpart: VGN-SZ110B). That's what my sister has and it is much sturdier, and Dell CS was easy to work with when she had to have her motherboard replaced (power issue).

to be fair

but to be fair, you have to have used a sony also to compare. Electronics in general may suck since they fail so often, that must be taken into account.

Macs are way overpriced. That being said, I wouldn't mind having one if someone gave one to me, but I doubt I would shell out the cash to buy one now when I could get a comparably specced Dell for $500 less.

Also if you get a Mac, please don't get a Macbook Pro. Overpriced, oversized, overpraised. The cheapest MBPro is only a little better (bigger screen if you're into that and .1 ghz faster processors) but is somehow something like $1000 more than the best Macbook.

Dell is still the best for me. No hassle CC, solid products. They take everything Sony ever did wrong and made it better.
